Chad Valley with Twin Shadow - ‘I Owe You This’

How absolutely sound must Hugo Manuel be? (We know he is talented.) On his debut Chad Valley album he has more guest appearances than Bob Geldof could rally together in his hay day. Not just any rabble neither. In running order, Young Hunger features, Twin Shadow, Glasser, Fixers’ fella Jack Goldstein, El Perro Del Mar, Harry’s Gym singer Anne Lise Frøekdal, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Active Child. (Insert multiple exclamation points.)

Even among all those distinct voices, it’s Hugo’s that rings clearest. In tone and intonation. Young Wonder is a singular and ably executed vision - more thoughts on that in a later post.

The Chad Valley / Twin Shadow collaboration opens the record - two artists that dip into the era-easel, in the musical reference sense. ‘I Owe You This’ is a bright bright shade of ’80s neon, a scintillating synth-pop gala. Hugo sings with full chested bravado; billowy, soft, powerful and an appealing hint of coy boy. George Lewis Jr. with more chivalrous assurance; valiant with a rippling accent. A split take on a single bequest.

Young Hunger, will be released October 30th via Cascine. That’s State-side. Elsewhere it is out November 19th via Loose Lips.
