‘Grief Wave’ by Lisa/Liza
Similarly waltzing her way into the chilly heart of Winter is Portland musician Liza Victoria, whose cryptic and ghostly approach to folk melancholia almost forms a metaphysical mirror to Angel Olsen’s earthly anguish. “Grief Wave” is taken from her self-released album Ancient Edge, and is wrapped in an impenetrable but comforting layer of loping acoustics and unintelligible babble, seemingly delivered in an ancestral language better felt than understood. I assume a single-track affair steeped in low fidelity tape hiss, the recording has the rustic, one-take charm of something that needed to be captured in the moment. For as fragile and transitory as these brief moments are, they’re almost celestial in beauty.
