Belle and Sebastian - Dress Up In You
I’m the singer, I’m the singer in the band
You’re the loser, I won’t dismiss you out of hand
You’ve got a beautiful face
It will take you places
You kept running
You’ve got money, you’ve got fame
Every morning I see your picture from the train
Now you’re an actress!
So says your résumé
You’re made of card
You couldn’t act your way out of a paper bag
You got lucky, you ain’t talking to me now
Little Miss Plucky
Pluck your eyebrows for the crowd
Get on the airplane
You give me stomach pain
I wish that you were here
We would have had a lot to talk about
We had a deal there
We nearly signed it with our blood
An understanding
I thought that you would keep your word
I’m disappointed
I’m aggravated
It’s a fault I have, I know
When things don’t go my way I have to
Blow up in the face of my rivals
I swear and rant, I make quite an arrival
The men are surprised by the language
They act so discreet, they are hypocrites, so fuck them too!
I always loved you
You always had a lot of style
I’d hate to see you on the pile
Of nearly-made-its
You’ve got the essence, dear
If I could have a second skin
I’d probably dress up in you
You’re a star now, I am fixing people’s nails
I’m knitting jumpers, I’m working after hours
I’ve got a boyfriend, I’ve got a feeling
That he’s seeing someone else
He always had a thing for you as well
Blow in the face of my rivals
I swear and rant, I make quite an arrival
The men are surprised by the language
They act so discreet, they are hypocrites, forget them
So fuck them too!
Belle And Sebastian - Simple Things
“…if you want me, you know where i am…”
Released in September 1998.
Belle and Sebastian - Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying
“…this is no declaration, i just thought i’d let you know…”
Released in November 1996.
Making their second appearance during this rather fine year of music. And what better band to say good-bye to ‘96 with.
Belle and Sebastian - She’s Losing It
“…she keeps the neighbors up all night…”
Released in June 1996.
Belle and Sebastian - Act of the Apostle
Very easily my favorite B&S song. Woke up humming it aloud.
Back when music videos meant something…
Belle and Sebastian - The Blues Are Still Blue
Belle & Sebastian - “Sleep the Clock Around” -
I don’t watch a lot of TV. Not like I’m a snob or anything, I just usually don’t have the time and the shows I like tend to get cancelled, or ruined by bad writing. Sometimes though I’m convinced to watch something and it turns out well, such is the case with The Killing. Total cougar crush on Linden, if I didn’t already love sweaters this would have done it. We don’t get a lot of backstory but her character has a lot of undercurrents of fucked up, and I’m a sucker for a flawed protagonist. Speaking of which, her partner Holder is great too, best white trash performance since the hillbilly on Walking Dead.
They don’t use a lot of music aside from atmospheric background but they played this during one of the early episodes. Which is as good a reason as any to post, but also kind of a funny coincidence. A little while ago a friend asked me to take part in a project she’s doing, like introducing a song that had special meaning for you and relating the story behind that. I decided not to do it but this song was one I’d considered. My parents had gone out of town for a few weeks which prompted the inevitable house party, and of course it got out of hand because kids are stupid. Because life is like a sitcom my parents had to fly home early due to a “work emergency” and didn’t bother to call first. Cleaning up the next day to The Boy With The Arab Strap blasting from the stereo a friend and I were treated to my dad dancing into the house to the strains of “Sleep The Clock Around.” Needless to say things went downhill from there, probably not the kind of thing to share on a family oriented show.

Belle & Sebastian - “Expectations” -
Just in time for Valentine’s Day. Nothing pulls at the heart strings quite like a romantic song. I gave this a bit of thought, probably almost a minute, and decided that Belle & Sebastian was the most romantic band I listen to. Because of Feelings. So I figured I’d post my favorite song of theirs. I know it’s not all that romantic but at least it’s not “I Don’t Love Anyone.”
