Chromatics - Into The Black
I know I have said it before, but allow me to reiterate what some will agree with and what some will find blasphemous: this cover of Neil Young’s track from ‘79 is better than the original. And it is all about tone, kids - re-imagined but not totally sacrificed; Young’s weariness is taken down a notch and the lyrics reemerge in Ruth Radelet’s voice as haunted.
Absolutely beautiful.
But I would not be a good music-lover if I did not point out just how good all of Kill For Love is. With this album, Chromatics have managed to create something that sounds classic in so many ways while still remaining very much ‘in the moment’ as well. Fantastic!

Listen/Download : Chromatics shared 35 minutes of unreleased material from Kill For Love sessions. Here’s what Johnny Jewel wrote on his soundcloud page: “Jet lagged & buzzing from Friday’s show in Paris, I couldn’t sleep…so I stayed up all night with Oko talking about color based dreams while blending these tracks together. Since the album came out, a lot of people on the road have been telling us they are curious to hear some of the unreleased music from the Kill For Love sessions…Recorded November 2009 through December 2011, these songs were all mixed between 4 & 6 a.m. After hours of tracking at the studio in Montreal, we’d clear the channels on the mixer, open a bottle of wine, & feel around in the dark…working our way through the atmospheric elements & peeling back layers of rhythm…throwing the songs into the abstract pile & playing them while driving home in the snow. In Amsterdam right now trying to upload it from the hotel. Fingers crossed…

‘Kill For Love (Night Riders Dub)’ by Chromatics
Stripped of it’s drum machine pulse and euphoric build, the relatively low key edit by Parisian group Night Riders leaves singer Ruth Radelet locked in a state of inertia, her voice left to roam alone against the alien-sounding throb of synthesiser. With less focus on forward momentum, and greater emphasis on her sullen tone, lines like “In my mind I was waiting for change, while the world just stayed the same” feel more like sorrowful regrets than empowering statements of individualism, as translates in the original.
Chromatics - Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)
No offense, Neil Young, but I think I like this version better than your own.
