Boy Friend // Secret City EP
The wait for new Boy Friend material is over! The group (which recently added a permanent third member) is easily my favorite Austin, TX project and have consistently released materials that have gone on to be enduring favorites in my collection. They’ve been teasing out the release of their latest cassette EP Secret City for a few weeks now leading up to its eventual release date. Today. Glory hallelujah.
The cassette release sees a few of the ladies’ return to the always-excellent Night People, the label that put out the now rare/classic debut release of Christa and Sarah’s former band Sleep ∞ Over. So in that sense they are sort of coming full circle on this one. As far as the tracks themselves, the band has only made two of the four available to stream on their Bandcamp page, but I can say with 100% confidence that this is the best they’ve ever sounded. The musicianship is tighter which eliminates some of the wandering qualities of their previous releases. There is also a newfound boldness in the songwriting of these fresh tracks, which is nice to hear. Where the group used to plumb watery new age for influence, here they are unabashedly nodding their head to more 1980’s synth pop. This is great stuff from a group who are slowly but surely revealing themselves to be someone to rely on.

You know, it takes a special brand of braveness to tackle the wondrous 80’s slow-rock feel of this Cars classic. I don’t mind saying that I didn’t think anyone could do it justice. And this is my favorite song from The Cars - always has been - and no one ever hits the mark, no matter how hard they try.
But guess what, my musical mavericks, we’ve got a winner!
Boy Friend // “Drive” (The Cars cover)
Wow, how did I miss this one? I had heard that Boy Friend occasionally busted this cover out at shows (to much adoration), but I didn’t know that the ladies properly recorded it until Christa Palazzolo sent it to me today.
Sure everyone knows the classic jam “Drive” by The Cars and there is no doubt that the track has had its fair share of cover versions over the years, but somehow Boy Friend manages to pick it up and make it sparkle like new again. Draping the track in reverb-soaked swaths of sheer sonic fabric, the ladies bring an atmospheric depth to it that only they could conjure. Listening to it now I’m realizing that this cover is the perfect respite from the onslaught of hardcore and metal that I’ve been featuring lately.
If you like what you hear here but have yet to check out Boy Friend’s excellent debut album Egyptian Wrinkle then by all means, run out and grab it. It’s easily one of my favorite albums so far this year. It’s out now on Hell, Yes!
