Second Hand - Rhubarb!

Psych-rock so heavy that I do believe it falls into the land of metal (or proto-metal) like a bomb of noisy freakishness.

Lap it up, kittens.

All the way, man.

Queens Of The Stone Age - Sick Sick Sick

Oh fuck, this song just automatically makes my body want to thrash around.

It’s a garage-punk-metal explosion of awesome.

A Perfect Circle - Blue

Oh, this straddles the line… But the whole nature of these posts tonight is to release myself from the shackles of what is & what isn’t ‘metal’.

It’s about tone & temperament, you know. And the vibe of this track is one of darkness, of conflict - so it fits my ‘metal’ leanings fairly well.

ps - i would have never paid attention, though, were it not for this fanvid.

Nine Inch Nails - Only

Let’s fact it, people: everything after The Fragile is slightly different than what came before. A little more slick, a little more smooth…

But it is still a little twisted at its core & that’s why NIN is a spectacular version of ‘metal’ to me. Because even when I think the rough & dirty aspects are lost, they somehow seep back in.

Quite insidious actually. Industrial metal, yeah? Yeah.

Christian Mistress - Pentagram and Crucifix

C’mon! With a title like that, you expect goodness… and I think you get it - no doubt. Such a classic ‘metal’ sound & with that fantastic late-70’s edge to the vocals.

Deftones - Change (In the House of Flies)

Been talking to a fellow music lover (accol) about metal - then & now, what is & what isn’t… And so I started thinking about what I consider to be ‘metal’ (and all variations of said genre).

I am finding that my idea of ‘metal’ does have some common factors - even if those factors come in vastly different packages. And the most common denominator is a particular sound. I am not even sure how to explain it to you, Tumblr-folk…

It’s slightly ominous, slightly raw. It is unsettling even as it is liberating.

I suppose, for my money, what I like in metal music is the feeling of losing some kind of control - and that’s what every song that I consider to be ‘metal’ has in it.
